Carnival Mardi Gras Review: 7-Night Cruise From Port Canaveral
Carnival Mardi Gras Review: What a 7-Night Sailing From Port Canaveral Is Really Like
I was lounging on the beach at Half Moon Cay when a potential client messaged me. I answered from my chair with the ocean in front of me. That is the life of a travel advisor, and honestly, it sums up how this sailing felt. Easy, relaxed, and a little bit funny.
I just got back from 7 nights aboard Carnival Mardi Gras. This was my second time on this ship, so I could compare it to my first sailing. Here is my honest review, including the parts I would skip.

The Quick Take
Best for: Families, groups, solo travelers, LGBTQ travelers, and anyone who wants a laid-back cruise with plenty of choices
Loved: The ocean view cabin location, the spread-out pools, smooth priority embarkation, Half Moon Cay, and the entertainment at Voodoo Moon and Broadway Beats
Skip or adjust: Chibang for dinner, the free food truck meal at Celebration Key, and arriving late to Center Stage shows
Would I sail it again? Yes

Cabin 4407: The Ocean View That Felt Like a Balcony Without the Balcony

We stayed in an ocean view cabin on Deck 4. It was the same size as a balcony cabin, minus the balcony space. If you do not need to sit outside with your coffee, that is a smart way to save money.
The location is what made it. We were near the elevators and toward the back of the ship, so the Main Dining Room and the Lido were easy to reach. We were only one deck above where we got off the ship on port days. When the elevator line got long, we took a quick flight of stairs up to our cabin.
I expected noise because we were near the elevator bank and Camp Ocean. It was quieter than I thought it would be. If you are sailing with younger children, being close to Camp Ocean is a real convenience.
The Ship: Lots of Space, Even When It Was Full
Mardi Gras was the first cruise ship with a roller coaster at sea, called BOLT. The ship has plenty of other things to do too. There are several pools spaced across the ship, so none of them ever felt crowded.
The ship seemed full, but I never had a long wait. Breakfast and dinner in the Main Dining Room moved quickly. We always found a table in the main buffet area too. The only real line I saw was in the morning at Java Blue, the specialty coffee shop.
Embarkation and debarkation: My friend and I are both Platinum with Carnival, so I can only speak to the priority options. They were well organized and moved smoothly and quickly.
The Vibe: Relaxed Cruising for Everyone
The overall feeling was relaxed. I saw solo travelers, LGBTQ travelers, groups, families, and older cruisers all enjoying the same ship. If you have worried that a big ship means a loud party every night, this sailing showed me you can set your own pace.
Dining Review: The Wins and the Misses
This is where most cruisers want the real story, so here it is.

What I loved
Bagels @ Sea (Street Eats area): A pre-breakfast mini everything bagel with bacon and scallion cream cheese. This was my favorite little snack.
Blue Iguana Cantina toppings bar: The tacos were so good. Pro tip: ask for the steak from the burrito, or swap shrimp for steak, and you can have steak or shrimp tacos.
Treasure Chest Voyage dinners: There was an enhanced dinner menu, with some form of lobster almost every night. Keep in mind that this was special to the Treasure Chest Voyage and may not be on a standard sailing.
The dining staff: Friendly and right on point.
What missed
Chibang (my last dinner): Almost all of my food came out cold. The quesadilla was ice cold, and the cheese had hardened into a blob. Only my rice noodle side was hot and fresh. My friend's food had the same problem. We went shortly after it opened, so I cannot say why. I went to the buffet afterward and had a much better meal.
Guy's Pig and Anchor BBQ: The food was good, but the portions were very small.
The Main Dining Room, twice: We skipped it on Cruise Elegant night because we did not pack dress-up clothes. Pack one outfit if the Main Dining Room matters to you.
Celebration Key
At Celebration Key, you can choose a free food truck-style meal or go to a sit-down restaurant for 40% off. I only tried the free option, and it was a letdown.
The conch fritter had almost no conch.
The burger tasted like a cheap frozen burger. Just get Guy's on the ship.
The chicken tenders looked heavily breaded.
The chocolate chip cookie was wet, so I did not eat it.
The pizza looked good. Mini Donut King has a truck at both Celebration Key and the Freeport, Bahamas terminal. I can vouch for him from the Freeport terminal, where I ate there. I have not tried him at Celebration Key yet since I was using my free food option on the items I had never had before.
Next time I will either trade my free meal for 40% off at a sit-down restaurant or wait until I am back on the ship.
Drink Package and Wi-Fi: Is It Worth It?
I did not buy a drink package. My friend had one as part of his casino package. If you drink soda or specialty coffee every day and have 3 to 4 cocktails a day, it may be worth a look.
I did buy the Value wifi package, because I wanted to post for my travel business and check my email and banking. It paid off when that potential client reached out while I was on the beach.
Entertainment: Hit or Miss, With Two Favorites
The comedy was hit or miss for me. I loved Voodoo Moon and Broadway Beats. My one complaint is that for shows at Center Stage, you need to arrive almost an hour early to get a decent seat.
The service was great, as always. I had no complaints.
Half Moon Cay: The Stop That Won Me Over
I really enjoyed the new Relax Away at Half Moon Cay. The beach was great, and the whole stop was beautiful. I did not get off in Grand Turk, and I do not regret using that day to rest.

The Little Things I Will Remember
My daily white chocolate latte or white chocolate frappe
The towel animals waiting in our cabin every day. They were so cute.
Sea day naps, and port day naps, for that matter
There is something about the laid-back, lazy vacation vibe of cruising that I love. Nothing on the schedule felt like a chore, and that is the whole point.

My Honest Verdict
Loved it | Would change it |
Cabin location on Deck 4 | Skip Chibang at dinner |
Spread-out pools with no crowding | Skip the free meal at Celebration Key |
Smooth priority embarkation | Arrive about an hour early for Center Stage shows |
Relaxed, welcoming mix of travelers | Pack one dressy outfit for Cruise Elegant night |
Half Moon Cay | Get to Java Blue before the morning line |
Would I sail Mardi Gras again? Yes. I would just skip Chibang for dinner.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Carnival Mardi Gras good for families?
Yes. I saw families on board, and my cabin was near Camp Ocean. A cabin close to Camp Ocean makes drop-offs easy.
Is an ocean view cabin on Mardi Gras worth it?
For me, yes. My Deck 4 ocean view was the same size as a balcony cabin without the balcony space. It is a smart option if you spend most of your time out on the ship.
Is the Mardi Gras crowded?
The ship seemed full, but I rarely waited. The pools are spread out, and I never had trouble finding a table in the dining room or buffet. The longest line I saw was for Java Blue in the morning.
Do you need dress-up clothes on Mardi Gras?
Only for Cruise Elegant night, and only if you want to dine in the Main Dining Room. I skipped it twice because I did not pack anything, so pack one outfit if that matters to you.
Is the Carnival drink package worth it?
It depends on how much you drink. If you have soda or specialty coffee daily and 3 to 4 cocktails a day, it may be worth considering.
